The Port of New Orleans is a diverse general cargo port, handling containerized cargo such as coffee, plastics, apparel, food products and consumer merchandise; and breakbulk cargo such as steel, non-ferrous metals, rubber, wood and paper.
Port NOLA is a modern deep-draft container terminal and the only container port in the State of Louisiana. The Napoleon Avenue Container Terminal has the capabilities and capacity to efficiently service the needs of ocean carriers and shippers.
The Container Terminal complex has an annual capacity of 840,000 TEUs with six gantry cranes and an expansion footprint for up to 1.5 million TEUs per year with 12 gantry cranes. Container terminal operators New Orleans Terminal and Ports America provide stevedoring and transloading services.
The Mississippi River Intermodal Terminal is a modern, efficient intermodal container transfer terminal adjacent to the Napoleon Avenue Container Terminal. It offers on-dock access to the Port’s six Class I rail partners via the New Orleans Public Belt Railroad. The CN offers daily intermodal service to and from Memphis and Chicago as well as Toronto and Montreal. The KCS offers intermodal service to and from the Dallas/Fort Worth market. Regular container-on-barge service provided by SEACOR AMH offers connectivity between Baton Rouge and New Orleans as well as Memphis.
The Port of New Orleans is ideally suited for a broad spectrum of breakbulk cargo with more than 13,500 feet of berthing space at six dedicated breakbulk terminals and direct-to-barge loading and unloading services. Direct discharge from ship to barge coupled with the extensive connectivity of the inland waterway system via the Mississippi River makes New Orleans a very attractive port for breakbulk and heavy-lift cargo. Temporary storage of breakbulk cargo is available with 1.6 million square feet of transit shed area. Breakbulk terminal operators include Coastal Cargo, Empire Stevedoring, Ports America and Seaonus.
Heavy Lift/Project Cargo
The Port of New Orleans’ operators have specialized expertise in handling heavy lift/project cargo. Superior rail and waterway connections make New Orleans your port of choice for moving oversized and overweight cargo. Several heavy lift shipping lines offer regular service into New Orleans. Railroad spurs at docks allow cargo to be loaded and discharged directly to rail. Direct load or discharge to barge provides convenient access to inland locations for the largest and heaviest loads.
The Port of New Orleans meets the diverse needs of the marketplace and increases its global competitiveness with its roll-on/roll-off (ro-ro) capability. Port NOLA’s facilities and terminal operators can accommodate multipurpose state-of-the-art vessels with a variety of cargo.
The Port of New Orleans handles perishable cargo in breakbulk or containerized formats at two modern refrigerated warehouses located dockside at Henry Clay Avenue Refrigerated Terminal and Jourdan Road to ease the movement of cargo to and from ship. Dockside blast freezers can freeze meat products to 0°F within 24 hours. New Orleans Cold Storage operates both refrigerated warehouses.
Port NOLA is included in the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Southeast U.S. In-Transit Cold Treatment Pilot Program, resulting in shorter transit times and increased efficiency for shippers. With more than 900 refrigerated plugs available at Port NOLA’s facilities, the Port is equipped to handle additional perishable cargo.
